Circular Economy

Connect returns, packaging and recovery decisions with the condition of each item, the cost of handling it and the value that can be retained.

From return flow to a measured reuse pilot

Study one collection or return process, define the scope of a packaging reuse pilot and examine the evidence behind its costs, serviceable cycles and review decision.

  1. Reading 1

Map the collection and return flow

Map one actual returns or packaging collection process: receipt, inspection, the next destination and the responsible people. Use the returns guide to clarify the handoffs relevant to that process.

  2. Reading 2

    Define one packaging pilot

Choose one parcel profile, route and customer group. Set the observation period, service boundary, protection standard and comparable single-use baseline, and agree how to measure results and when to stop, revise or expand.

    Read the pilot guide
  3. Reading 3

Compare complete cost and unresolved evidence

Read the complete-cost method for an agreed currency, period and service boundary. Examine acquisition, collection, inspection, cleaning, transport, storage and loss or damage costs alongside completed protected deliveries. Compare the same service with the single-use baseline and keep unknowns visible.

Key questions

Decide the next use at receipt

Connect each return to the original order and separate the reported reason from the inspected condition. Use approved routes for restocking, repair, resale, recycling or disposal where appropriate, with a named owner for exceptions.

Compare recovery after the costs

Use the returns guide to compare expected proceeds with collection, transport, inspection, repair, repacking and selling costs. Include time until the item is available again, then compare the actual outcome with the decision.

Review packaging with protection in view

Use the dimensional-weight guide to understand how sealed parcel measurements affect chargeable weight. Test fit, protection and handling before changing packaging, then review chargeable weight, packaging cost and damage together.

Operations Guide

The hidden cost of shipping empty space

Dimensional weight turns package volume into a weight equivalent. Understanding the rule is only the start; consistent measurements and safe packaging make it useful.

Operations Guide

A return is an inventory decision

Moving a parcel back is only one part of reverse logistics. The operational goal is to decide its next destination promptly, safely and with a clear view of recoverable value.

Questions about packaging reuse

What separates product returns from packaging reuse?

For a returned product, examine its inspected condition, approved next destination and recovered value after processing. For packaging reuse, examine protection, serviceable returns, observed cycles and complete costs within a defined parcel pilot.

Read the returns analysis
What counts as an observed serviceable cycle?

Count a cycle only when a pack completes a protected delivery and returns serviceable after inspection and any cleaning. A return alone or advertised durability does not establish another observed usable cycle.

Read how to measure cycles
How do I calculate complete cost per protected delivery?

Use the same currency, period and service boundary to total allocated acquisition, collection, inspection, cleaning, transport, storage and additional loss/damage costs, including failed attempts. Show the allocation basis, remaining stock value and cash spending separately, and count replacement purchases once under acquisition. Divide by completed protected deliveries; if that denominator is zero or missing, record unknown/not calculable, and use an equivalent baseline for any comparison.

Read the cost method
Does repeated use automatically prove an environmental benefit?

Repeated use alone does not establish an environmental benefit. Assess a separate lifetime inventory of materials, production, transport, cleaning energy and water, and end-of-life against an equivalent delivery service, and state the remaining unknowns.
