Set the use case and return route

Choose one parcel profile, delivery lane and customer group. Document the current single-use pack, protection performance and costs. Map who returns the empty packaging, where it is collected, and who pays. EMF models consumer packaging returned for cleaning and refilling using French data; treat its findings as context, rather than parcel-mailer evidence.

Protect the goods before repeating the trip

Agree acceptance criteria before issuing packs: intact closures, readable identifiers and protection suited to the goods. Name the inspection owner and quarantine route. Confirm access to cleaning, drying and storage, with a recorded process appropriate to the packaging and contents. Test protection after return and preparation, not just with a new sample.

Measure actual serviceable cycles

Track each pack and dispatch: issued, retrieved, serviceable and rejected units, return time and losses. Log protected deliveries separately. Count an observed cycle only when a pack completes a protected delivery and returns serviceable after inspection and any cleaning. A return or advertised durability alone does not prove another usable cycle. Separate first uses, subsequent uses and unresolved returns.

Compare a complete cost

Use one currency, observation period and service boundary. Include initial packaging acquisition allocation, collection, inspection, cleaning, transport, storage and additional loss or damage costs. State the allocation basis and remaining stock value; show cash spending separately. Record replacement purchases within acquisition, without charging the same replacement again as a loss. Divide comparable total costs, including failed attempts, by completed protected deliveries; compare with the baseline without assuming savings.

Decide with evidence; assess environmental claims separately

Set stop, revise and expand criteria for protection, serviceable returns, turnaround and cost before launch. Review the cohort with its owner and record missing evidence. For environmental claims, build a separate lifetime inventory of materials, production, transport, cleaning energy and water, and end-of-life treatment against the same delivery service. The European Commission describes the EU packaging framework; check the specific rules and applicability for your operation separately before approving a pilot.

The practical takeaway

Expand only when observed protected deliveries, serviceable returns and complete costs support the decision; assess environmental claims with a separate inventory.
